Orlando, Fla. (March 4, 2021) – As part of its commitment to encourage the region’s tourism and economic development, Viva Air, the leading low-cost airline in Latin America, is continuing its international expansion by launching its second international route to the U.S. from its hub in Medellin, Colombia.  Starting June 10, 2021, the airline will begin three weekly nonstop flights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between Medellin’s José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) and Orlando International Airport (MCO).  Viva Air currently also offers nonstop service between Medellin and Miami International Airport (MIA).

As part of the ‘Viva Effect,’ the airline expects to deliver the following as a result of the low-cost carrier’s arrival in Orlando:

  • A 20 percent reduction in market fares for this route
  • An 84 percent load factor in the first year
  • 27,700 passengers in the first year
  • Introductory fares starting from $216* roundtrip are currently available at vivaair.com

In addition to the new route, Viva Air has announced Medellin as the airline’s main hub.  Moving from the more congested El Dorado International Airport in Bogota provides travelers with convenient connections with the rest of Colombia, as well as easy connections to Orlando, Miami, Mexico City, Cancun, and Lima, Peru.

As we continue to grow our international operations and low-fare network, we are excited to bring our low fares to another high-demand U.S. market,” said Viva Air Group President and CEO Felix Antelo. “We look forward to giving more people the opportunity to travel affordably between the U.S. and our main Medellin hub, as well as convenient connections to the many destinations we serve throughout Colombia and beyond.”

We are always encouraged when new air service is planned to Central Florida,” said Phil Brown, Chief Executive Officer for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “This flight to Medellin not only adds to existing service to the popular Colombian destination, but connects Orlando to Viva Air’s hub airport, giving travelers access to destinations throughout Colombia, Peru and México.”

I am excited to hear that Viva Air will be offering direct flights between Orlando and Medellin starting in June,” said Consul General of Colombia in Orlando Claudia Bustamante C.  “This is great news that will boost tourism between the two cities, as well as provide a convenient option for thousands of families who travel between these two destinations, not to mention the economic benefits for our community.  Congratulations!

Travelers flying from Orlando to Medellin will be able to enjoy a city known for its welcoming people and night life.  In addition to nonstop service between Medellin and Orlando, the new route will provide convenient connections to Viva Air’s extensive network throughout Colombia, including the popular beach destinations of Santa Marta and San Andres, as well as cultural cities such as Bogota, Bucaramanga and Cali, plus direct connections to Lima, Peru.
