The first ever Sunwing flight to Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire departed from Toronto Pearson International Airport at 10:00am local time yesterday morning. A commemorative photo booth was set up for passengers to receive a special memento, along with other souvenirs, before departure. Upon arrival in Bonaire, the Sunwing plane received a water cannon salute before both the passengers and crew disembarked to an extremely warm welcome.

Captain Chris Lewis and his crew were greeted by Commissioner of Economic Development & Tourism Mr. Hubert Martis, Director of Tourism, Mr. Maurice Adriaens and Marketing Manager for Bonaire Tourism, Malinda Hassell, together with representatives from the island’s hotels and resorts. Captain Lewis was invited to cut a specially made Sunwing cake in honour of the new flight service. Then he and the entire crew were officially recognized as ambassadors of Bonaire and each received a special commemorative medal.

The weekly Sunwing flight service to Bonaire provides Canadians with the only direct connection to this relatively undiscovered tropical gem this coming winter. Flights are scheduled every Sunday until April 15, 2018.

The perfect destination for active travellers like divers or wind/kite surfers, Bonaire is recognized for its commitment to sustainable tourism practices and coral preservation. Consistently rated as one of the top diving destinations in the world, it boasts 86 dive sites which are home to 57 different corals and some 350 marine species. On land, adventures are equally varied ranging from hiking up the island’s tallest peak, Brandaris, to relaxing in the diminutive and colourful capital, Kralendijk.

Sunwing offers value-added accommodation packages at a selection of the island’s leading resorts. Those wishing to be close to the downtown scene while still enjoying a relaxing environment may wish to stay at the Divi Flamingo Resort and Casino; while divers and non-divers alike can opt for the inclusive Plaza Beach Resort, where snorkellers can explore the colourful coral reefs nearby. Diving enthusiasts will surely enjoy Buddy Dive Resort and its solid blend of action and relaxation, as well as the newly-built Delfins Beach Resort that caters to groups with one or two bedroom studios for a comfortable stay.

All Sunwing packages include return flights on Sunwing Airlines where passengers can sit back and relax while on board, with award-winning inflight service that includes a sparkling wine toast, complimentary non-alcoholic beverage service and buy on board selection of light meals and snacks with choices inspired by Food Network Canada Celebrity Chef, Lynn Crawford. Passengers also benefit from a generous complimentary 23kg checked luggage allowance.
