Singapore Airlines Not Extending A380 Lease
Singapore Airlines, launch customer for the Airbus A380, will not be extending its lease period for the first Airbus A380 it received in 2007.
A spokesperson said that the first 5 Airbus A380 were on a 10-year lease and the company has decided not to extend the lease for the first airframe. It will decide on the faith of the remaining 4 airframes that come off their lease periods later, not specifying an exact date.
The consequence of Singapore not extending their lease is that a cheap airframe comes available to the market. Airbus currently is having a difficult time filling delivery slots. This can become increasingly more difficult when cheap alternatives such as second-hand airframes will flood the market.
Fleet
Singapore Airlines currently operates a fleet of 107 aircraft and has another 97 on order. 19 of these aircraft are A380s and 5 of the orders are for the Airbus A380. With 92 orders for the Boeing 787–10 and Airbus A350–900(ULR) combined, Singapore Airlines seems to have a preference for smaller aircraft that can be operated efficiently in a point-to-point network.
