A long rumored order from Qatar Airways for Boeing has been finalized. For months there have been rumors about a possible order from Qatar for wide body as well as narrow body aircraft. The former order seemed like a formality after the White House greenlighted a sale of fighter jets to Qatar Airways. The order for narrow body aircraft had also been widely rumored after Qatar Airways refused to take delivery of the Airbus A320neo.

Qatar Airways orders 40 wide body jets

Months before the agreement between Qatar Airways and Boeing being finalized it was rumored that the Boeing 777 Classic and Boeing 787 would be part of the deal, but the exact mix was left undefined. The carrier ordered 10 Boeing 777–300ERs and 30 Boeing 787–9.

Order intention Boeing 737 MAX

Mildly surprising is the order intention the Qatari carrier signed for 60 Boeing 737 MAX 8s valued at $6.9B. It is no secret that CEO Al Baker has been very unsatisfied with performance of the PW1100G turbofans that it selected to power the Airbus A320neo. The order intention, however, was widely unexpected.

When fully exercised the order could be as big as 100 aircraft and have a market value of approximately $9B.
