Merpati Nusantara Airlines plans to resume operations in 2019
Merpati Nusantara Airlines plans to resume operations in 2019 after ceasing operations in early 2014 due to financial problems. The carrier has implemented a restructuring plan and has revitalized the company in the last four years, according to President Director Ekanugraha Asep.
Once the first flight launches to Biak, Papua, the airline will offer services to the Eastern Indonesia region, and may launch flights to international destinations thereafter. Merpati Nusantara also plans to exit the low-cost business model.
Asep says there is a private investor looking to invest US$432 million in the carrier, without disclosing the company or terms. Following the investment, he says the airline will be able to compete with other airlines in the region.
