Zimbabwe government plans to merge Air Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Airways under one board, according to Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Joram Gumbo, who confirmed the appropriate legal framework was currently being devised.

Under the new structure, Zimbabwe Airways will operate international routes while Air Zimbabwe will be operating domestic and regional routes.

Additionally, the aircraft assets of Zimbabwe Leasing Aviation Company (ZALC) will be transferred to the new structure. The assets include four B777s and several Embraer aircraft. Following the transfer, the government will wind up ZALC and the debt of Air Zimbabwe will be taken over within the developed framework.

An undisclosed amount of financial resources has also been committed to Air Zimbabwe to help achieve its goals.
