Kwacha Airlines was granted its air services license from Malawi's Ministry of Transport and Public Works, ahead of the carrier's planned launch of operations on 01 September 2018.

Kwacha was approved to operate domestic and international services, with plans to launch both passenger and cargo operations with a B737-700.

The company is owned by locals, James Makunje Jr., Chris Kapanga Jr., and Noel Chalamanda.
