Madrid, January 17, 2024.- Air Europa gave a special welcome to its most recent Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner this Wednesday. The company has organized an event with which, in addition to celebrating the continuity of aircraft deliveries planned in its Strategic Plan, it has shown, for the first time, the new Globalia maintenance hangar at the Madrid-Barajas airport. The building, which is expected to enter service in March and in which more than 30 million euros have been invested, will become a center of technical excellence for the airline.
The event was led by the president of Globalia and founder of Air Europa, Juan José Hidalgo, accompanied by the company's CEO, Jesús Nuño de la Rosa, and its general director, Richard Clark. In addition, Sergio Ramos, Commercial Sales Director Europe & Israel of The Boeing Company, Peter Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer of AerCap, and Javier Marín, executive vice president of AENA, participated.
The day has allowed us to show the important advances that the new hangar brings together. The building is 140 meters long and 23 meters high inside in a completely open space, which will accommodate up to three wide-body aircraft, such as the Dreamliner, or up to six narrow-body aircraft, such as the 737. In total, it occupies an area of more than 22,400 square meters and an area for maintenance tasks of 11,130 square meters. 115 professionals will work in these facilities this year, although the workforce will gradually increase until reaching 180 direct workforce in 2025.
Increase in the Dreamliner fleet
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was a prominent protagonist on this day. This unit, one of the two that arrived in December, precedes the four deliveries that will take place throughout 2024. The objective is to reinforce the capacity of the fleet and continue increasing the offer of routes and frequencies planned for 2024. .
At the end of 2023, Air Europa's Dreamliner fleet has transported more than 15.6 million passengers since the arrival of this aircraft to the company in 2016, when it became the first Spanish company to operate it. This model, which is already the best-selling model in history in its category, has become Air Europa's main reference. Their presence has been key to the expansion of the business, as well as to consolidate the airline's strategic role in the Madrid-Barajas hub.
In terms of efficiency, the Dreamliner consumes 20% less fuel than other similar aircraft, which reduces its emissions by another 20%. The design of the fuselage and its engines contributes to reducing the acoustic impact by 60%, while being able to shorten journeys by up to 40 minutes. It is made of 50% composite materials, which makes it more resistant and much lighter. Likewise, its interior makes the difference: it has the largest luggage compartments, higher aisle heights, more space between seats and an air filtration system capable of eliminating 100% of viruses, bacteria, odors and other polluting agents.
“It is a great satisfaction to show this new infrastructure today, for the first time, as well as to welcome one more Dreamliner to our fleet. Air Europa continues to advance on the path of growth, consolidating itself as an airline of the future, key to connectivity between Europe and America,” says Juan José Hidalgo, president of Globalia. “This center of excellence will be a reference in maintenance. Furthermore, we are happy that it is the perfect environment to work with our 787s, the result of the trust that two strategic partners such as Boeing and AerCap have in our project,” he adds.
“Air Europa has been a key partner in Europe for the 787 Dreamliner program and we are delighted to directly deliver the first 787s to the Air Europa fleet from early 2020. The 787-9 will allow Air Europa to continue to expand its operations profitably. by opening new long-range routes, as well as contributing to an impressive 20 to 25 percent improvement in fuel consumption,” says Sergio Ramos, Commercial Sales Director Europe & Israel at The Boeing Company.
